I’m Gene. I build things that help people decide: dashboards, data products, and lately AI tools that do work nobody wanted to do by hand.

For about a decade I’ve worked in business intelligence and web analytics, mostly where a business question runs into a technical implementation. I’ve run a large emissions program, built the reporting leadership actually used to run their business units, and handled reporting, data validation, and quality assurance for the analytics behind a utility’s web presence. Different tools every time, same underlying problem: someone has a decision to make and no clean way to make it.

Right now I’m most interested in AI, and in the harder question of what’s worth building at all. I built an agent that reads and analyzes web customer comments, which won an award at an internal hackathon. Since then I’ve been building smaller things, mostly to find out where these systems earn their place and where they’re just another layer. That’s the direction I’m heading: product and program work, deciding what to build and why instead of measuring it after someone else decides.
